Memphis Nealy

Memphis Nealy (Anthony's other nephew - and Claude's older brother) was put on the stand in order to testify against Anthony (although not his own brother…)

Why did the defense not seek to clarify the confusing line of questioning that was put to Memphis Nealy when he took the stand to provide evidence against his Uncle?

Memphis Nealy has low intelligence and it was clear that he was unable to grasp legalistic terms and that he was both confused and anxious about the terminology used. He was intellectually unable to comprehend so-called 'objective terms' as used in a court of law.

This was clearly demonstrated when Memphis Nealy was asked "Is your Uncle the black male sitting in the court room on trial today?" Memphis actually answered "No", although his Uncle, Anthony Nealy, was the only other black male within the court room
